All points taken, and yet I have to criticize Paul Street: WHY? Why take the time to write this letter? It just makes him look like a run-of-the-mill liberal. Taking the stance of “criticizing Obama” presupposes that you EXPECTED OBAMA TO BE SOMETHING OTHER THAN WHAT HE IS. The real Left should already know what the President of the United States is. Barack Obama may be a great guy… I don’t know; I’ve never met him. But as President of the U.S.A., what else can he do but be President of the U.S.A.? Only a naive liberal idealist would expect something else. I think you guys at Prole Center get what I’m saying.
This is yet another example of the working class begging and pleading at the feet of capital. Paul Street should know this, if he wants to claim “Left”. Too many “Marxists” and whatnot slip into the old habit of being “liberals” without even a second thought. At Selecting Stones, we’re always trying to demonstrate that we ACTUALLY MEAN IT when we say we disregard “liberals” every bit as much as “conservatives”. Paul Street needs to quit thinking like Aristotle: We’re not searching for a “golden mean” here. When will people like him “get it” and see that, no, the American political class is NOT committing “hypocrisy” at all, in any way? If he can wrap his head around this, then he will have made some progress.

I think the letter was not really meant for Obama. It’s unlikely he’ll even receive it personally. Paul Street just used that as a platform to get a message across to us, but you make a good point. I especially like: “But as President of the U.S.A., what else can he do but be President of the U.S.A.?” Well put. You know the Prole Center has much respect for our Selecting Stones comrades! I’m just glad Paul changed his mind about voting for Obama for . . . “strategic reasons”?!!
