Empire Files: The Rise of History’s Biggest Empire

The debut episode of Abby Martin’s new show, Empire Files, on teleSUR. It’s a pretty good primer on the rise of the U.S. Empire and I’m happy to see that Abby is perhaps moving further to the Left, but I have to quibble about three points:

  • Abby says that empires “always fall.” Well, what good is that if they’re just replaced by another empire? We need to nurture optimism, but we also need a dose of realism because this fight is going to require a sober attitude and MASSIVE struggle; and we can’t count on much, if any, help coming from an anti-imperialist social movement within the U.S.
  • Speaking of empires, without some clarification I’m afraid that most viewers will associate the word “empire” with the collapse of the most recent so-called “Soviet Empire” – which is nonsense. The Soviet Union was NOT an empire; not by any stretch of the imagination!
  • I would have liked Abby to make some mention of the class struggle and the important role played by the Soviet Union in holding at bay, for as long as it existed, the full destructive power of U.S. capitalist imperialism.

Interesting enough, and I was pleased to see the British connection in there.
    Best wishes, Pete.

Yes, I was very impressed by the remarks of the former special forces soldier. It takes exceptional courage and integrity to break ranks and speak out the way he is. He is a true hero. I want to give him a hug.

good quibbles. without marx for theory and structure, activism can only attained a short term reform.
