Does anyone else have a problem with this? For a long time I’ve kept pretty quiet about it, but I now want to make clear my feelings regarding this gay pride / LGBTQ “movement.” In my opinion, this is NOT a Left issue. The issue of gay marriage in particular should not be part of any Socialist program. Championing gay rights and making them a key component of Left organizing and outreach is a great way to alienate most of the working class, at least in the U.S. I’m especially talking about the way in which this bourgeois gay movement manifests itself in such an outrageously flamboyant and obscene way like the image above from a gay pride parade.
Take a look at this excerpt from a recent Workers World article; notice how much ink is wasted catering to gayness above all other types of oppression? What’s going on here?
The ruling class, desperate to destroy growing unity among the working class under the leadership of the most oppressed, has even allowed the racist likes of multibillionaire Donald Trump to become a so-called “serious” contender for the Republican presidential nomination. Not because they think this bellicose racist can win, but because whipping up racism, sexism, ableism, anti-immigrant, anti-migrant, anti-lesbian-gay-bisexual-trans*-queer and every other kind of bigotry is exactly what the capitalist class needs at this moment in history. (Trans* is used with an asterisk to indicate the spectrum of all the different genders of people who do not conform to the either/or of male/female.)
I want to make clear that I don’t think we should condone violence or hatred toward gays, but neither should we make gay marriage or the normalization of gayness, especially a bourgeois type of “gay culture,” to be a part of our program.
That’s just my opinion.
